Earth from my river, Brazil 1998

This series describes in a poetic way the work of the ceramic artist Izer Campos and the mystical world of the Amazonas and the people living there. The photographs document the process of how she scoops the clay out of the river that she turns into organic works of art. Inspired by her environment, her sensual objects talk about the beauty of nature in the tropical forests.

The Deforestation of the rainforest, Brazil 1998

More than twenty years ago I documented the deforestation of the rainforest as well as the coal workers in Paragominas in the Brazilian state of Pará – a truly harrowing experience. I felt as if thrust into the inferno and was shocked to see the conditions the coal workers had to live and work in. The smoke made it almost impossible to take pictures and yet the children grew up there with the charcoal kilns as their playground. Unfortunately the deforestation of the rainforest has become an even more pressing matter nowadays. President Jair Bolsonaro and his controversial environmental policies pose a massive threat to the fragile balance of the rainforest as well as the survival of the indigenous population.

“The exhibition Metamorphosis. Brazil 1998 confronts these two photo series for the first time. It opens up a reflexive space of thought in which creative and destructive human forces meet.” Curator Claudia Augustat
